This live recording archive features songs that Randy sang lead or co-lead on between 1972-1977, during his tenure with the Eagles. These recordings are audio only. For video footage, please see my Performances page.

Tracks are listed alphabetically, then chronologically by date. Use the page jumps below to skip to a certain song. Note: There are no known live recordings of “Try & Love Again” with the Eagles. You can find later recordings here.

Please bear in mind that most of these tracks are audience recordings, therefore the quality is going to suffer. Some are very quiet or have a lot of noise. I highly recommend listening with headphones or earbuds.

Randy shared lead singing duties with Glenn Frey and Don Henley on this J.D. Souther song. The Eagles performed “How Long” regularly in their early days, but did not record it because Souther chose to include it on his 1972 solo debut. The Eagles finally recorded the track in 2007 for their Long Road Out Of Eden album.

Provided below are recordings of “Take It To The Limit” from 1976-1977. For later recordings or video footage of performances, please refer to my blog post about “Take It To The Limit” or my Performances page.

The recordings at the Forum in 1976 and Wembley Empire Pool in 1977 featured orchestral accompaniment.

“TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT”
Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan
February 2nd, 1976

Perhaps the earliest known live recording of “Take It To The Limit.” Randy performed the song somewhat differently early on. He did not hold the high note as long as he did in later performances. He also added some vocal flourishes to the end.

Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan
February 3rd, 1976

Someone counts off at the beginning, possibly Randy. The Japanese audience yells Randy’s name at the end.

After the line “You can spend all your time making money,” Randy adds: “Yes, you can.”

Glenn intros by saying “We’re gonna get Randy up here to sing another tune. It’s called “Tryin’.” Then, a few seconds later, he says “I’d like to sing it for him.” Don’t miss Randy’s extended high note at the end. Excellent version.

The Eagles go full blast on “Tryin'” for nearly 7 minutes. The addition of Don Felder on the 1974 recordings (this one being the best) gives the song a hard rock edge not heard in previous versions.

  1. I’m praying that “Oh, Darlin’” was actually recorded during the Border sessions, and one day it’ll see the light of day. You can always dream.

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a studio recording of it or even a personal recording. He had his own recording equipment in those days. Whether or not any of these recordings still exist is another story.

  2. My goodness Jess, you put so much time & effort into this one. This is fantastic. What a testament to Randy’s talent! Thank You so Much!
